Message from Carol Tallon: 

With the number of housing units granted planning permission down by 12.5% in Q2 (35.5% decline in approvals across the four Dublin local authorities), the Housing Minister chose a bad week to boast that the State is currently delivering 50% of all new homes. 

How broken does a market have to be when the State is delivering half of all new homes?

More than half of local authorities must double housing output to hit new targets and Micheál Martin has attacked local authorities for “inertia” and “lack of proactivity”, promising that the Government would intervene to stop them dezoning land for homes.  

In today’s Business Post, I explore how systems collapse when decision-makers face no consequences for being wrong, and ask “What would real accountability in planning and housing delivery look like?” 

After the Mayor of Limerick’s bold moves to deliver modular homes to the rental market, it was confirmed that twenty modular units are to be built for homeless families in south Dublin by next year.

RURAL NEWS: On the rural front, the Taoiseach also promised action on the decade-long awaited review of the guidelines for one-off housing, indicating that the policy shift WILL allow people build homes on their own land – let’s hope this wasn’t just Ploughing Championship fever; however, it does coincide with overwhelming public backing for relaxing planning rules to allow children of farmers to build homes on family farms (83% in favour and just 9% opposed).

This is increasingly urgent in light of a key Mayo study seeking action on rural isolation and spatial imbalances.

Some interesting US data could teach rural Ireland something about how migration trends have changed on foot of housing challenges and the rise of remote work, with most rural counties in Virginia now seeing an influx of young adults.
