Message from Carol Tallon: 

You couldn’t make this up… This week saw the publication of a report from the Dept. of Finance showing how Ireland’s population could grow much faster than previously expected – In a high growth scenario there would be 7.59 million inhabitants by 2065, up from the current level of 5.45 million, an estimate significantly above most recent CSO projections.

This comes the same week as construction activity data shows falls across all areas for the first time in 18 months, with the new home starts at a four-year low. 

Armed with this data, Wicklow County Council plans to dezone lands earmarked for the construction of up to 3,000 new homes – in direct defiance of the Housing Minister’s orders earlier this summer. 

And to add to these housing delivery woes, the Examiner reports on ‘Planning chaos as hundreds of applications risk being invalid after regulation error’ (all planning applications submitted since August 6 may be invalid due to errors committed within the Department of Housing, meaning hundreds of applications could be deemed to be technically invalid!).

Promised JR reform dominated industry coverage this week, with Ian Guider in the business Post summing it up best: Strangled by planning challenges: “At the core of this problem is the rise of determined objectors who have turned the planning process into a tool of obstruction. Ireland has ended up in a situation where projects of national importance are treated no differently to a neighbour’s dispute over an oversized attic extension. This is not how a serious country should function…” . But the emerging picture is that the reform will not be the game changer it was billed to be, and its attempts to weed out serial objectors are missing the mark (the more we hide from radical transparency and relentless communication of strategic infrastructure, the more shadows we create).

On the community front, there was a great turnout for the ‘Field Names of Athlone’ talk hosted by Gaeltacht Átha Luain and delivered by Dr Finnegan, of the University of Limerick – understanding the origins of placenames is important to homebuilders and placemakers naming new developments (which will eliminate some of the current development delays).

Back on site with host Sean Downey, Director of Safety, Education & Training, episode 5 of the CIF Construction Safety Campaign 2025 podcast, is now available and comes to you from  Clonfad Solar Farm, one of Ireland’s largest solar farms (300,000 solar panels across 600 acres – check out the drone footage online!). Sean chats to Shannon Malone, Health & Safety Advisor with Suir Engineering about the technical challenges of safety on site for such a large-scale project.
