‘The Irish Housing Crisis: Has Government Intervention Really Improved Housing Access and Affordability for Young People in Ireland’
A fifth-year student at Causeway Comprehensive in Kerry, Grace Diggins, has just been awarded a gold medal at the Young Economist of the Year (YEOTY) awards in UCD for her houisng project:

— Survey of teachers under 40 in her own school on home ownership and the knock-on effects of the housing crisis
— CSO data on the number of young people still living in the family home and what that means for them, and
— International comparison with Denmark and what Ireland could learn from it
A teenager in Kerry sat down, looked at the EVIDENCE, SURVEYED the people around her, BENCHMARKED against a country that has done it differently, and reached conclusions clear enough to win gold. That is the standard. The question this week is whether the system charged with actually delivering housing is operating to it.

The CCMA’s 6 May 2026 update to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Infrastructure & NDP Delivery sets out the scale of what is now in train across the local authority system:
— 31 of 31 councils engaged in variation work
— 14 variations made to date
— 15,102 hectares of residentially zoned land at completion of the current programme
— 35 units/ha assumed average density
— 528,000 units of implied residential capacity
— c. 1.1 million people housed at 2.1 persons per home

Before we start, a quick note of thanks to Galway Chamber for hosting such a strong and timely Galway West by-election debate this morning. A particular word of thanks to CEO Karen Ronan, who did an excellent and fair job moderating and timekeeping, while keeping members’ interests front and centre throughout.
Unsurprisingly, gridlock and the lack of housing emerged as the biggest issues in the room. Yesterday’s TG4 /The Irish Times poll reinforced just how live this contest is. While the Chamber is apolitical, with my home (and future home 🤞) and our iProperty Radio in the heart of Connemara, I needed to understand who on the panel saw a liveable, viable, socially sustainable future for rural Galway. For me, Seán Kyne and Thomas Welby were the strongest voices here. It was my first time hearing Helen Ogbu, who was the only candidate to talk directly about LISTENING to communities. Mike Cubbert urged those present not to apologise for being ambitious for Galway, which went down well in the room. Undoubtedly, the question on how best to leverage Ireland’s upcoming EU Council Presidency separated the experienced candidates from those running on very narrow issues. The decades of experience of the current Leader of Seanad Eireann , Sean Kyne, shone through as the only candidate who could talk about what he had already done, as well as what needs to happen next for Galway and the wider n western region.
