Applications are now being accepted for a duo to manage the island’s coffee shop and overnight accommodation for the 2026 season, running from April to mid-October, weather permitting.
Located off the Dingle Peninsula, the Great Blasket Island is uninhabited year-round, aside from seasonal staff, and welcomes thousands of day visitors each year alongside overnight guests staying in three restored holiday cottages. The caretaker roles, run by island custodians Billy and Alice, are demanding, immersive and highly sought after, with application numbers capped due to overwhelming interest in previous years.
The successful applicants will jointly manage the island’s coffee shop and three self-catering cottages. Responsibilities include meeting and greeting overnight guests, full cleaning and turnover of cottages between stays, serving tea, coffee and snacks to daily visitors, managing stock, maintaining public facilities and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of operations on the island. While the setting is extraordinary, the owners stress that this is not a holiday role. During peak season, particularly June to August, the island can be extremely busy and the work physically demanding.
A typical day begins with preparing the coffee shop and public toilets for opening, followed by guest check-outs at 10am and several hours of cleaning and preparation before new arrivals. The coffee shop operates throughout the day, closing at approximately 5pm, after which stock checks and set-up for the following day take place. Check-in times vary depending on tides and weather, underlining the need for flexibility and resilience.
Living conditions are simple but comfortable. Caretakers sleep in shared accommodation above the coffee shop, with access to a private bathroom, sitting area and a kitchen used exclusively by staff. A solid-fuel stove provides evening heat, and all food is provided and delivered daily from the mainland. Laundry is also handled off-island. During the busiest summer months, one or two voluntary helpers may stay on the island to assist, sleeping in a second upstairs bedroom.
The role is open to EU and non-EU applicants, although non-EU candidates must hold a valid working visa. Travel costs to reach the island are not covered, and applicants are expected to make their own way to the departure point before boarding the boat. A wage is paid, details of which are discussed during the application process, and all food and accommodation on the island is included. Alcohol and personal toiletries are not provided.
Days off are weather-dependent, reflecting the realities of island life. Extended periods of bad weather may result in no sailings, while long spells of good weather can mean continuous busy days without breaks. During quieter periods or prolonged bad weather, caretakers are encouraged to assist with light maintenance or DIY tasks, though guest experience and coffee shop operations remain the primary focus.
Fluent English is required for the role, with Irish language skills welcomed but not essential.
