Soaring rents and a sharp rise in older renters are leaving more Irish households financially exposed than ever before. New analysis from Royal London Ireland shows that twice as many people aged 65 and over are renting from private landlords today compared with 2011, while record numbers of people in their 40s, 50s and early 60s are now renting.
This means a growing number of people are at risk in the event of unexpected illness, income shocks or changes in housing security.
Against this backdrop, people struggling to buy, rent, retrofit, or adapt their homes are invited to a special Housing Unlocked information evening this Wednesday, 11th December, at Westside Community Centre.
This community event will bring together local buyers, renters, experts and service providers to share real stories, practical supports, and clear, actionable guidance for anyone navigating today’s challenging housing market.
Attendees will learn about:
- Supports available for first-time buyers
- Retrofit and home-adaptation grants for homeowners
- How Galway buyers have successfully managed bidding, financing, and the supply squeeze
- New opportunities to unlock vacant and derelict homes – including funding, incentives and step-by-step guidance
- Renter rights and advice on securing your next home
The evening will include short talks, open Q&A, and hands-on advice for people at every stage of the housing journey.
