Funding call opens for regeneration projects in towns and cities across Ireland
Local authorities invited to submit transformative proposals under new national regeneration fund

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne has urged local authorities to apply for funding under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund, with the first call for project applications now open.
The scheme, announced today by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, replaces and expands on the previous Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF). It is intended to support regeneration projects across towns and cities, with a stronger emphasis on disadvantaged areas and expanded eligibility to include smaller urban centres.
Under the new criteria, towns with populations of more than 9,000 people can now apply for funding, widening access for local authorities nationwide.
The Department said the fund is designed to support projects that deliver measurable regeneration outcomes and contribute to the broader renewal of towns and cities. Local authorities have until 1 May 2026 to submit applications.
Funding will be available for two categories of projects. The first includes projects that can move quickly to delivery, with up to €9 million available for initiatives capable of beginning construction by September 2027. The second supports earlier-stage projects, with grants of up to €150,000 to assist in developing proposals and building a pipeline of future regeneration schemes.
Announcing the call for applications, Minister Browne said the new programme builds on previous regeneration initiatives while expanding access.
“Today, the first call for applications under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund goes live,” he said. “Building on the important work of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, this new scheme widens the net for those who can apply by taking in smaller towns from all over the country and will provide stronger targeting of disadvantaged areas.”
The Minister said the fund presents a significant opportunity for local authorities to deliver impactful projects within their communities.
“This fund offers local authorities the opportunity to regenerate and transform our towns and cities and have a significant positive impact on the lives of those who live in them,” he said. “I would strongly urge all local authorities to submit suitable projects and take advantage of this opportunity to deliver local transformative initiatives.”
The Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund forms part of the Government’s broader strategy to support balanced regional development, revitalise urban centres and strengthen local economies through targeted investment in regeneration and infrastructure.
