Expanded conservation grants open to traditional homeowners across Ireland
Funding of up to €5,000 aims to unlock retrofit, fire safety and reuse of heritage housing stock

Applications have opened for an expanded grant scheme to support owners of traditional homes in accessing expert conservation advice, with funding of up to €5,000 now available.
The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage confirmed that the revised Historic Structures Fund Conservation Advice Scheme will fund up to 67% of the cost of specialist reports, covering conservation works, fire safety improvements and energy upgrades.
The scheme has been broadened to increase uptake and impact. It is now open to homeowners living in their properties, removing the previous restriction to vacant homes. Eligibility has also been extended to include multi-occupancy residential units above commercial premises and traditional farmhouses, including those without formal statutory protection.
Traditional buildings, including Protected Structures and properties within Architectural Conservation Areas, often require specialist approaches due to their age and construction methods. The scheme is designed to reduce the risk of inappropriate works, support better decision-making and ensure value for money by enabling early engagement with conservation professionals.
The funding can also support homeowners participating in the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s Traditional Homes Pilot, including pre-works risk assessments to ensure energy upgrades are compatible with heritage buildings.
The initiative aligns with national policy objectives under Delivering Homes, Building Communities 2025–2030 and the National Residential Retrofit Plan. It also complements the Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant, which provides up to €50,000 for vacant homes and up to €70,000 for derelict properties.
Two application streams are available. Stream one applies to traditional houses in towns, villages and cities, including buildings being converted for residential use. Stream two is targeted at traditional farmhouses, including vernacular properties with no statutory protection.
Applications must be submitted by 5pm on 8 May 2026, with guidance and application forms available via the Department’s website.
The expansion of the scheme is expected to support increased activation of Ireland’s existing housing stock, particularly in rural areas and town centres, while ensuring that heritage buildings are conserved and adapted in line with best practice.
