On Property Matters this week, we have chosen to run our Co-living Special from the archives as we know this is an increasingly controversial – and arguably, misunderstood – type of housing here in Ireland. Ireland needs many more housing options, not just co-living, and we cannot allow a NIMBY approach to dictate housing delivery. We do, of course, need to address the very real concerns of neighbouring residents and members of the political opposition (now Government – what a difference a day makes!) and housing commentariat. Joining us on the show is Anil Khera, founder and CEO of Node Living, Ed Burke, Founder of Roomigo and Claire- Maya Chawaf, a member of Roomigo. Also featured is news of Bartra Capital‘s Dun Laoghaire project and an interview with (then) Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, where he defends his position on co-living.
Anil and Ed both joined us to discuss the ongoing situation surrounding co-living. Anil explains to us what tenants are really looking for in urban cities and what is missing from co-living today. He also reminds us that we must think about the amount of private vs public space that is shared in co-living and what is likely to be sustainable. This rings true, especially during these unprecedented times. Ed tells us that co-living comes in many different shapes and sizes but fundamentally it is really all about the people and creating communities. It may get a bad rap, but this is something that must change as it may just be the solution to the housing crisis.
Claire- Maya Chawaf moved from her home in Paris, France to Dublin in recent years and she joins to discuss the importance of living with the right people when moving to a new city and how co-living is the perfect antidote to loneliness if you don’t know anyone.
